Read about our adventure cycling from Vancouver, British Columbia to Summerside, PEI during the summer of 2017. This is a true story of our cycling trip. We were out of shape, in our late 50s and one of us had (still does) a serious heart condition. But, we had always wanted to ride our bikes across the country and last summer, we did!
“This was the hardest thing I’d ever done.”
“I knew that if I didn’t do this, I would regret it for the rest of my life, so I had to try.”
Read an excerpt:
"We carried on. It was very warm and sunny, the traffic increased and the paved shoulder was reduced to about a foot wide in some areas. Since we were walking our bikes more than riding, we took up a lot of the road so it wasn’t too much fun. I was ahead of Dennis most of the time and was almost afraid to look back to see what condition he was in. I was very worried about him but he plodded along.
At around 4:00, we were getting concerned that we would be stuck. Our camping gear was in Canmore and we had to make it to Manning Park Lodge. Before we left PEI, I sent out our camping gear to my parents in Canmore because I thought that the Rockies would be too hard to have our bikes so heavily loaded. I had booked our hotels and AirBnBs in advance so we were on a schedule. If we got in trouble and couldn’t get to our accommodations, I don’t know what we would have done as we wouldn’t be able to “wild camp” (camping in the bush), so in hindsight, it was probably not the best idea.
We continued along slowly because we were so tired of pushing those bikes. Every muscle was aching, we were hungry, hot and generally miserable. I would check on my phone every once in a while to see where we were, but the phone reception was terrible so we really didn’t know. We saw a sign up ahead and when we got close enough to read it, it said that we had reached Allison Pass Summit. Were we glad to see that sign! We were actually at the top of the mountain and almost at Manning Park!"
